PTO Shaft for Agricultural Gearbox
Agricultural equipment includes various PTO shafts. Each one is connected by yokes at each end and rotates between 540 and 1,000 rpm. A safety universal PTO shield is commonly installed on both ends of a PTO shaft to protect the operator. These protective shields are also found in tractors and agricultural implements, ensuring maximum efficiency. The use of internal yokes also provides added safety.
The agricultural gearbox is designed to change the output speed of a PTO drive shaft. It can be used as a decreasing or increasing ratio gearbox. With the decreased ratio gearbox, it reduces the PTO shaft’s speed from 1000 rpm to 540 rpm, allowing you to use equipment designed for 540 rpm. On the other hand, an increasing ratio gearbox increases the speed of the PTO shaft from 540 rpm to 1000 rpm.

Select the correct PTO Shaft
The selection of the PTO is essential to provide sufficient power to the auxiliary equipment without seriously limiting the main functions of the prime mover. The selection of the power takeoff requires application-specific information and the power requirements of the auxiliary or drive components.
The following is a quick list of PTO selection considerations:
◆Torque and horsepower requirements for driven components
◆Intermittent or continuous operation
◆Application usage
◆Speed requirements for driven parts
◆Mounting face dimensions and options
◆Space allocation
◆PTO participation mode
Having these specifications makes the correct selection of the PTO a simple task.
PTO torque and horsepower requirements
The speed and rotation requirements of the PTO shaft are one of the most critical specifications in the above list, and the speed is necessary to calculate the torque. The torque and horsepower requirements of the driven components are critical for optimum performance.
In most cases, the user manual of the drive assembly will provide this information, but if necessary, the calculation of these requirements is relatively simple using two basic formulas.
HP = GPM x psi ÷ 1714
HP = GPM (pump flow in gallons per minute) x psi (required pump pressure pounds per inch) ÷ 1714 (conversion factor to produce HHP or hydraulic horsepower). This formula provides the horsepower requirements of the driven parts and is used to calculate the torque requirements.
T = horsepower × 5252 ÷ speed
T (torque) = HP x 5252 (the speed at which torque and horsepower intersect) ÷ RPM (speed of drive shaft of driven part).
Remember that these calculations apply only to the PTO that drives the hydraulic pump. If the power takeoff provides power for different types of drive components, the manufacturer is required to provide the specifications of the drive components.
